1997 World’s Results
Almost 10 years ago now, I entered my very first footbag competition in Portland Oregon at the 25th Annual World Footbag Championships. What an experience. Attending that year with Jubal and Jeremy absolutely changed my life as I got to witness Peter’s amazing routine during semi-finals where he had choreographed with Toby Robinson play ing the didgeridoo. I watched Eric Wulff (I have this on video somewhere) and Ryan Mulroney both go dropless in the prelims and met some other legends of the game while playing in some of the coolest shred circles ever.
So when Eli showed me the “overall men’s” results for this tournament just now, I was really curious about them. cCheck them out. The top 30 players are all net players. Peter, who won freestyle that year is only ranked 58th overall! Man, does crosss-discipline training ever make a huge difference in overall! Both my homies Jubal and Jeremy made the under 100 club, while I’m sitting pretty at 159th overall in 1997
As Eli pointed out, I beat him! ! by a whole three places
Anyhow, that concludes this trip down memory lane. Still kickin’ . . .

Hey, hang on a second there! I was #6, and played singles, doubles, and mixed doubles freestyle (and did reasonably) on top of net. And at the time, John Leys and Sean Flynn were also serious freestylers. (Little known fact: Sean Flynn was one of the team that toured Czech Republic for Russell Promotions which led to Vasek and Ales and other great Czech freestylers learning the sport.) Of course, Jesse Fryckman is a net player but he also was pretty darned good at freestyle in his day. I get your point, but just want to keep you honest.

Yeah, I guess that post could be misconstrued. I wasn’t really trying to say that the people at the top didn’t deserve to be there. I just thought it was really weird that you can _win_ a world title and still only place 58th overall. I don’t really know how the stats are calculated, but I’m sure everything is on the up and up; it’s just funny is all. Besides, this is a blog, right? Isn’t it my job to stir up bullshit and controversy?
Thanks for commenting Steve!
