Choosing the Right Footbag for Your Style

If you pay attention to the universe, it seems that it’s always sending you subtle hints and messages of how you to make that next decision: What is it you’re going to do right at this moment. It seems to me that I’ve been hearing that little voice say, “post a blog about picking the right sack”.

I was browsing the modified forums earlier today when I ran across a thread that talked about the “Best Bag for Consecutive Kicking“. It’s always interesting for me to see what people’s opinions are on this subject, and to read posts by the informed kickers like Erick Chan and Matt Cross (these guys are serious shredders that know what they are talking about), even though in this particular thread they really didn’t provide their own opinion on the topic at hand - choosing the right bag for kicking.

Another question recently came up on our live help page. He was a new player, looking to step up his game, and thinking that he probably needed to invest in a Fearless 55:

And now, finally, the answer you’ve been looking for; What is the best bag for your style?

“It depends”.

If I was going for the world record in basic kicks, I’d probably go with a Fearless 55. It has some of the best control of any bag on the market. But I really don’t think one needs to go all out for a top of the line bag to do basic kicks… Earlier today, I was finishing up writing some “work scope variances” at my (recently gone from part- to full-time in the interest of paying off my debts) engineering job with Power Engineers, inc., and decided to take 10 minutes to see how my Mr. Sandbag stood up to the ol’ kicking test. The answer… Well, I got just over a 1000 kicks (my superficial self set goal) on my first attempt and started into tricks - I dropped my second gyro outside kick attempt.

That being said, I think that overall the Mr. Sandbag is a great all around bag. Not to mention that people like myself can’t really afford a Fearless 55, and when you can get precisely SIX Mr. Sandbags for the cost of ONE Fearless 55, well, to me that’s a darn good deal.

When it comes to raw shredding, again, if I was competing in the World Championships I’d likely stick with a Fearless 55 over a Mr. Sandbag. But i really think that most players, at least until they get to the guiltless level (that’s 3 adds and up every contact), should truly weight out the costs of spending six times the dough for that small percentage gain in benefit.

Here at Freedom Footbags, we carry a lot of quality bags. You can compare them all side by side here:

I’ll finish by saying that it is our humble opinion that the vast majority of sites out on the web that carry bags really have no clue what they are selling, and unfortunately quite a lot of it is garbage. I certainly wouldn’t recommend going with any of the bags under the Hacky Sack brand name, much less the sites that pass off their crap-sacks as Hacky Sacks (while violating Wham-O’s trademarks). I’d be willing to bet that the vast majority of the site owners that sell footbags couldn’t get 10 kicks with their own products, much less 1000. Okay so maybe I’m a bit bitter - I’m trying to be a bit more lighthearted about things - it’s just frustrating to see so many people out there get taken by sites that are just in it for the buck, for the bottom line… customer be dammed.
