The Sole Purpose Footbag Club, which is by far the largest and most active club in the northwest, is again hosting the US Open Footbag Championships! This tournament is sanctioned by the International Footbag Player’s Association, and will be the premier event for footbag this year in North America!

Top contenders include last year’s winner Jim Penske, along with David Clavens, Gorden Bevier, Lon Smith , Nick Landes and Justin Dale. This year’s winner will have the bragging rights as the US Champion for 2008. One major competitor, Jorden Moir, will unfortunately not be making it due to having to decide between the US Open or the World Championships latter this summer in Prague. (I Can’t say I blame him for missing the Open).

Freedom Footbags will be in attendance at this event as a major sponsor and will have footbags, DVD’s, and hopefully Quantum03’s for sale.

See you there!

Fire Footbag Banned In South Australia

June 19th, 2008 by Genzu

We’ve been selling the Fire Footbag, which is made in Australia, for quite some time now. Unfortunately, due to new regulations imposed by South Australia’s Office of Consumer and Business Affairs, the product has been banned from Export. We have a limited amount of stock left, and once it’s gone this item will be permanently discontinued.

The Fire Hack is absolutely not intended for unsupervised use by minors. This is why Freedom Footbags requires that customers be at least 18 years of age to purchase it. It is extremely dangerous, and must be used responsibly.

According to The Age, a longstanding newspaper (now online) in Victoria, Australia, South Australia’s Consumer Affairs Minister Jennifer Rankine had this to say about the fire footbag:

The Fire Footbag essentially becomes a flaming missile which presents extreme safety risks for people who could quite easily be burned by the footbag once it’s been set alight… Making such a dangerous item available to children or anyone else is absurd and unacceptable.

You can read the full article here: Flaming footbag toy banned in SA.

In closing we will reiterate that this footbag is not a toy, is is extremely dangerous, and is should only be used under sober adult supervision in controlled environment.

2nd Annual Benefit Mortorcycle Ride, BBQ, and Footbag Tournament!

June 17th, 2008 by Genzu

This event is in honor of Tim Gangne, Jr., a remarkable young man who’s life on this earth was cut to only 18 years.

Tim Gangne, Jr.

Tim was a great lover of the Hacky Sack. Last year Tim’s family, the event organizers, decided to hold a small BBQ and motorcycle benefit to recognize the anniversary of Tim’s passing. This year the family decided to incorporate a footbag tournament in conjunction with the BBQ and motorcycle ride to honor his love for the sport.

This will be a casual/fun tournament with emphasis on fun and competitions in “Ironman” (Last man standing) and “4-Square” (A personal favorite of mine).

The event takes place in Arundel, Maine on this Saturday, June 21st! Please see
Tim’s official website for details.

Freedom Footbags is helping out by providing some top quality shred gear and cool prizes.

Shamble: Online Footbag Magazine

June 14th, 2008 by Genzu

Over the past few years I’ve heard talk from various people wanting to start up a new footbag magazine. Many had thought about making an old school paper version, but it just never seemed that practical. It was always the online version that seemed the most feasible, and finally someone has taken the initiative and launched the first ever online footbag magazine (that is with the exception of the WFA’s original Footbag World Magazine which was in paper and now has older versions online).

Asmus Helms of Denmark has spearheaded this new site, called Shamble.

The site describes itself as follows:

Shamble is a newly started online footbag magazine. The goal behind Shamble is to bring quality articles about the footbag scene.
Shamble is worldwide and focuses mainly on the freestyle part of footbag.
Shamble will focus on freestyle footbag both as a competitive sport and as a lifestyle.

Of particular current interest is the writeup on You Don’t Mess With The Zohan, a film starting Adam Sandler and and a whole host of top notch footbag players (many of which are good personal friends of mine). The shot of it is that, unfortunately, they didn’t even manage to call the sport footbag in the movie - they stuck with the old school brand name Hacky Sack ®. Also, apparently a lot of the footbag scenes were cut form the movie, but we are all hopeful that it will be featured more in the DVD version.
