The Klutz Footbag (Hacky Sack) Book Review
I’ve just spent about 15 minutes giving a solid once-over of Klutz’s ‘The Footbag Book: All the Tricks, All the Tips’ (2002, Klutz). You can find this book for $12.95 used, but you might be a bit disappointed. A while back I took the time to write a review on amazon.com. In short, this book has a nice, quaint description of basic kicks, and descriptions of two whole freestyle tricks! (I just realized that I was a little overly harsh in my review, when I said it only showed one trick). It also has a few footbag facts, all of which were taken from our favorite footbag site. Anyway, I have a few more things to say about this book.
First off, there is really little information of use in this book to someone who wants to learn anything about freestyle footbag. For example, they advise leaning ‘away’ from the footbag when doing an outside kick. This poor advice is likely to instill bad habits in would-be shredders (in nearly every freestyle trick or kick, you want to maintain your center of gravity over or at least towards the footbag). When this book does finally get into the secrets of freestyle, it describes how to do the flying clipper (jester kick) incorrectly as well, saying that you should land on both feet at once (you can actually have more control by landing only on the kicking foot).
Finally, when the book describes toe stall, it says ‘there are no secrets here…’ Well, I beg to differ! Anyhow, the main purpose of this blog is to get myself pumped up for writing a new section in the Freedom Footbags blog that is specifically aimed at beginners, called ‘The Beginners Corner’. Stay tuned for free expert advice.
