The Bear Bag is a handcrafted 32 panel footbag made for intermediate to advanced play. This footbag is excellent for freestyle! It is easy to stall and set consistently.  This is the 2-Stitch bag, where the standard Bear Bags are 3-Stitch bags (the number of stitches along each edge of the hexagon or pentagon).  They come in two fabric types, facile and hybrid (a combination of facile and micro-suede), and they come in a variety of colors and patterns.

Bear Bag 2-S are 1.5 inches in diameter and weigh approximately 2 oz. (55 grams).  They are standard freestyle size (slightly smaller than a golf ball) and long lasting when used for freestyle and properly cared for.

Footbag artisan Brian “Bear” Sherrill hails from Mountain View, California. Now the most popular stitcher in the United States, Brian was inspired to start stitching when he was browsing through a local fabric store and found some crazy looking material, micro-suede. Upon further inspection, he found that it was quite grippy, shiny, and thin…PERFECT for a footbag.

The hybrids have very high gather to compensate for the floppiness that comes from the microsuede. This allows the bag to be round and stally at the same time.

Filler: non-toxic metal, and a combination of light space fill. Most bags are about half to three quarters full.

The 32-Panel Footfighter is made in Poland by people that play serious freestyle footbag.  The material used on the Classic, Spiked, and Mini-Footfighter is extremely soft, making for extremely fast break in.  All Footfighters are filled with a mix of small plastic beads and non-toxic metal, the preferred filler by top freestylers.  This footbag is easy to stall, but requires special care, no toe-ups! The Abshire Pro 65 was designed for the intermediate to advanced level players.  The AP65 is larger than the AP60 to allow for instant play and to prevent blowouts due to the weight. This bag is very easy to stall and set. It weighs 65 grams and is filled with a tungsten alloy. It is a 32 panel, pentagon & hexagon design. This bag comes in either facile (brighter colors) or amaretta. Facile AP models are good for all surfaces, where the amaretta AP models are best on indoor and soft surfaces. They are ready to use, brand new, with a very short break-in time.

Dan Ednie, the IFPA (International Footbag Player’s Association) Education Director spent five months from February to June in the Czech Republic in 2009. During that time he had access to the inner world of now seven-time world champion Vasek Klouda. The pinnacle of advanced professional freestyle footbags is here. Some companies like to throw around the term “Pro Footbag” as a marketing gimmick. The Fearless 55 Footbag on the other foot, err… hand, is the real deal. Back in the 90′s large, light, floppy bags were the norm even for top professionals. However, there has been a general trend towards smaller, slightly fuller, and heavier bags particularly over the past few years. This is because dexterities have become more popular and more numerous. Back in 2001, there were only a small handful of people (myself included) that had landed a four dex move. Now, there are probably about 100. More dexes means more uptime sets, and tighter windows (the space available between the legs for the footbag to travel).

The Fearless 55 is the culmination of Richard Abshire’s 15+ years of hand-stitching professional bags as well as input from the top player’s in the sport today. In the words of the 2010 US National Champion, Jim Penske, “I would have to say the Fearless 55 bag is the best Abshire yet!” The footbag consists of 32 panels in a carefully balanced eight color “atomic pattern” (see picture below) using the A-910 panel cut. It’s then filled with environmentally friendly (and heavy) tungsten and topped off with a small amount of other fillers for proper consistency to weigh in at 55 grams. “Fearless” is a footbag term that describes a level of play whereby only moves worth five adds or more are done: “This footbag was specifically designed with performing five add tricks in mind,” says Richard Abshire, the inventor and stitcher.

That said, if you are not a freestyler, but rather a casual kicker, this is probably not the footbag for you. The life of this footbag will be cut short by hours of kicking; it was designed to be stalled. If you are a casual kicker that would like to learn freestyle, the Mr. Sandbag and the Infinity footbag are perfect for you. Richie stands behind these footbags, but know that you shouldn’t expect a full refund if you happen to misuse/abuse this footbag.

The Fearless 55 is now available in both facile or amaretta. The amaretta style fearless 55′s have an extremely supple feel and are clearly top of the line. The break in time is quicker, and many top players love how they perform, but the life of the bag is slightly less than the facile footbags. Steri-strips are great for repairing the small pinholes that appear over time.
